I often get asked whether a vegan or whole-food, plant-based diet can help you lose or gain weight. The short answer is yes, any diet that puts you in a calorie deficit or calorie surplus can aid in weight loss or weight gain. Often times this is easier to achieve on a whole-food, plant-based diet, because you are able to eat large portions of nutrient dense foods that are not as calorically dense as animal based items such as cheese and milk.
