Spooky Halloween Watermelon
We all know pumpkins as the official symbol of Halloween. But today, we’ll be turning pumpkin’s distant cousin into a Jack-o-Lantern. All hail the spooky Halloween watermelon!
Did you know that cucumbers, melons, squashes, and pumpkins are all related? That’s right, they all belong to the plant family Cucurbitaceae. And this October, I decided to use watermelon instead of pumpkin to create a sweet, juicy Jack-o-Lantern with some help from Papa Bodrug!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s very simple to make – it’s basically a fruit salad with a spooky twist!
- Traditional pumpkin Jack-o-Lanterns are usually just decorative. However, this spooky Halloween watermelon makes a wonderful sweet treat!
- Making this recipe can be a great bonding activity for the whole family!
- It makes a perfect centerpiece for a Halloween party!
- This watermelon Jack-o-Lantern is endlessly customizable – you can use your favorite fruit, and make the “face” and simple or as complex as you like.
How to Make This Recipe
First things first, we need to carve our watermelon. To make it easier, you can draw a Jack-o-Lantern face on the watermelon.
Slice the bottom off the watermelon so that it can sit flat. Then, carve out the face using a sharp knife. Be careful when you do it! If you’re doing it with your kids, it’s best if the adult takes care of the carving part.
Finally, remove the inners of the watermelon using a spoon. Use the watermelon as part of your fruit salad!
Add more fruit of your choosing. We used cantaloupe, grapes, blueberries, and strawberries.
Assemble on a cutting board or a plate to serve with the fruit starting in its mouth and spewing outwards. There you have it, one sweet and spooky Halloween watermelon!
Hack It!
- Depending on what fruit you like, you can make the fruit salad with practically anything! It also means you can have more variety in your dish.
- If you’re not confident carving with a knife, you can use cookie cutters to make round, starry or heart-shaped eyes!
- Any leftover watermelon can be used to make vegan ahi tuna, watermelon slushy, or a refreshing salad.
- The fruit salad can be served as a topping for ice cream, or simply on its own!
Store This Recipe
Any leftover salad can be stored in a closed container in the fridge for 3-4 days. The Jack-o-Lantern can be chopped up and used to make watermelon rind jam!
