Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Although it’s nice to see a rise in vegan products available at the stores, they are usually quite pricey. This easy 2 ingredient chocolate mousse is quicker than a trip to the store, not to mention cheaper!
- The other important difference is that this homemade mousse uses less packaging than store-bought vegan mousse cups.
- You don’t need any fancy equipment to make this recipe. Not only is this easy 2 ingredient chocolate mousse quick to prepare, you only need two mixing bowls and a whisk!
- If you have last-minute dinner guests, this is the ideal dessert you can whip up with no notice.
Inspiration For This Recipe
This easy 2 ingredient chocolate mousse is based on a French dessert known as chocolate chantilly.
In the culinary context, the term chantilly usually refers to a preparation method that involves whipping the substance until it is light and airy. The name is derived from the Château de Chantilly, a historic palace located near Paris, which is known for its beautiful gardens and is associated with luxury and elegance.
Key Ingredients

The beauty of this recipe is that it only takes two ingredients:
- Dark chocolate is the main flavor and texture component.
- Hot coffee or tea melts the chocolate, allowing you to whip the mixture into an airy mousse.
When chocolate is melted, the heat breaks down the existing crystalline structure of cocoa butter, converting it into a liquid state. If the chocolate is then cooled down without any intervention, it can result in a grainy or gritty texture.
The addition of an ice bath or direct contact with ice helps the melted chocolate cool down quickly. As the chocolate cools rapidly, it can start to re-crystallize in a way that favors the formation of small, stable cocoa butter crystals and makes a fluffy mousse.

Hack It!
- The most natural urge would be to enjoy this dessert immediately. If you somehow manage to stave off the temptation, you can store this mousse in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Don’t be afraid to get creative with the toppings. You can stick with chocolate shavings or chocolate chips, but it is also delicious with orange zest, crushed nuts, frozen berries, or coconut whipped cream on top.
- If you avoid caffeine, you can use decaf tea or coffee. You can even get scrappy and melt the chocolate with date seed coffee. Alternatively, you can use hot water with a drop of vanilla extract for flavor.
- Be sure to check the ingredients when you purchase the chocolate. Dark chocolate is usually vegan-friendly, but some manufacturers sneak in dairy fats or milk powder into the mix.
How to Make Easy Chocolate Mousse

Step 1: Fill one of your mixing bowls with ice and water.

Step 2: In a second bowl, break up the chocolate and combine it with hot coffee or tea. Stir gently until the chocolate fully melts.

Step 3: Without wasting any time, stack the bowl with the chocolate mixture on top of the bowl with ice.
Whip the chocolate vigorously as it cools. As it thickens, it will lighten in color and fluff up.

Step 4: Remove your easy 2 ingredient chocolate mousse from the ice and keep stirring until you get a fare happy with the consistency.
Transfer into your serving cups or bowls and garnish with shaved chocolate.
